📍 Hamble - Dartmouth

The Dartmouth Regatta is a fairly new addition to the LSS UK racing calendar, but we love it! A boat delivery and regatta combined into one so you can make the miles and have the fun of day races. Dartmouth definitely puts on a good show, with entertainment most evenings and we can tell you now: the fireworks on Saturday are not to be missed.

THE EVENT

The Dartmouth Royal Regatta Sailing Week will put on its 178th edition. The regatta received Royal Assent from H.M. Queen Victoria in 1856 and has been a premier event in the yachting calendar ever since. Set in some of the most picturesque coastlines in the British Isles, the natural harbour of the River Dart and the wide expanse of Start Bay brings competitors from all over the UK to take part in these outstanding yacht and dinghy racing events.

THE PLAN

Tuesday 27 August

Meet in Hamble in the morning (or the evening before) to set off for the delivery to Brixham in Devon. This will be an overnight sail of approx. 92 nautical miles.

Wednesday

Arrive in Brixham in time to participate in the Saville Passage Race in the afternoon, which will take us past the dramatic stretch of the coast down to Dartmouth.

Thursday - Sunday

Thursday marks the start of the four-day Dartmouth Royal Regatta Race series. Normally there are two races a day but this might increase to three races per day for the IRC classes. At night, we will be at Darthaven Marina (or in accommodation if you have booked that).

Sunday

After we finish our racing for the day, we will set sail back to Hamble. This will be a continuous trip expected to take approx. 40 hrs.

Tuesday 02 September

Arrival back in Hamble and after some general cleaning & tidying, we will finish.

ACCOMMODATION

This year we have the option to stay ashore if you prefer. This will be an additional £300 per person and will provide accommodation (centre of town) for the entire time we are in Dartmouth.

If you would like to take this option, please indicate this on your booking form.

  • The Dartmouth Regatta is open to anyone with some experience in sailing and would put themselves at a competent crew or above. Ideally, you’ll have past racing experience but not essential. At LSS we believe the attitude to contribute and learn is the most important.

  • The event starts in Hamble on the morning of Tuesday 22 August and until Tuesday 29 August (please count on afternoon arrival)

  • You will be racing on one of LSS’s regular boats, most likely Kindred Spirit, a race-prepped Sigma 38, but others are possible too.

    The boats are:

    Kindred Spirit - Sigma 38

    Kotari - Jeanneau 49

    Playing Around - First 40.7

    Red Hawk - First 36.7

  • The boats are based on the River Hamble.

Kindred Spirit is at Deacons Boatyard, in Bursledon.

  • The Solent, which the River Hamble is on the Northern edge of, is the perfect training area between Southampton Water and the Isle of Wight.

Notorious for consistent winds, wicked tides, and a gorgeous variety of harbours, rivers and anchorages to visit.

An average week will see you visit any of the below:

    • Cowes

    • Yarmouth

    • Beaulieu river

    • Lymington

    • The Needles & Alum Bay

    • Newtown Creek

    • Portsmouth

    • Wooton Creek

    • Osbourn Bay

    • Langstone Harbour

    • Chichester Harbour

      and many other little anchorages.

  • During the event, accommodation on the boat is provided. However, LSS do provide an onshore accomodation option for £300 per person, which will be in the centre of town. Please indicate it in your booking form if you are keen on this option.

  • If you’ve enjoyed it and want to continue to build your racing skills, we’d recommend that you keep an eye on the LSS website. Maybe you’d like to try something more offshore like a cross channel race weekend?

  • We will be in marinas and harbours every day most likely so you won’t need to shower on the boat. The boats are fitted with a functional toilet, sink, showers and kitchen (galley) for cooking.

  • Please take a look at our kit list here.

Excellent cruising and racing

I have been sailing with LSS/Ruaraidh a fair few times now; both racing in the UK and cruising in the Med. Both are well organised and a great value for money. The cruising is relaxed and very enjoyable. I have been to Croatia and Sicily, on very comfortable yachts and had a wonderful time. The racing…
