Join in Falmouth and cruise around the West country with the aim of spending a few days in the Isles of Scilly having an early morning heading around the Lizards and West to these gorgeous islands.

Most people who visit the Isles of Scilly arrive by plane or ferry, stay in a hotel on St Mary's, and see the islands the way you see anywhere with a timetable. Arriving by boat is a different thing entirely. You anchor where you like. You wake up looking at an empty beach. You go ashore when it suits you, and when the wind changes you simply move somewhere better.

That's the week. We leave Falmouth on the Monday and sail down past the Lizard and around Land's End — a long, satisfying day at sea and, for a lot of people, the first time they've been properly out of sight of land. By evening we're anchored in Scilly.

Then three days of the good stuff. Tresco's Abbey Gardens, which have no business existing at this latitude and are full of palms and proteas anyway. The Turk's Head on St Agnes, the southernmost pub in Britain, with a beer garden looking out over the water. Bryher, where you can walk from a millpond-flat anchorage to Hell Bay and watch the Atlantic arrive on the other side of the island fifteen minutes later. Beaches on St Martin's that you will genuinely have to yourself. Swimming, if you're game — it's August, the water's clearer than anywhere in England, and it's colder than it looks.

Then home the easy way. The south-westerly that made the passage out a proper piece of sailing turns into a gift on the way back: warm, fast, downwind days along the West Country with more good harbours than we have nights. Fowey, Salcombe, the Helford, the Yealm. We pick as we go, based on wind and what everyone fancies.

The honest bit: Scilly is weather-dependent and we mean it. There's no marina and the anchorages are open, so the crossing needs a settled forecast. If August doesn't oblige, we don't go — we cruise the West Country instead, which is nobody's idea of a bad week. What we're promising is a great week's sailing somewhere beautiful, not a guaranteed set of postcodes.

  • Yes, if you wish to amend your booking, please email us at bookings@londonschoolofsailing.co.uk and we will try to accommodate your request. Please note that any changes may be subject to a sum of £25 per change to cover our administrative costs.

    If you need to cancel your booking, please let us know on bookings@londonschoolofsailing.co.uk and the cancellation will be effective on the day a message is received.

    In case of a cancellation for a major event (e.g. Transatlantic crossings, Offshore mile-builders, The Fastnet Campaign, Dartmouth Regatta, any cruises abroad), the following charges apply:

    • 100 days or more before departure or event start: deposit only;

    • 71-99 days before departure or event start: 50% of the total event price;

    • 43-70 days before departure or event start: 70% of the total event price;

    • 42 days or less before departure or event start: 100% of the total event price;

      In case of a cancellation for a minor event (e.g. RYA training, Round the Island Race, Taittinger Regatta), the following charges apply:

    • 56 days or more before departure or event start: deposit only;

    • 29-56 days before departure or event start: 50% of the total event price;

    • 22-28 days before departure or event start: 70% of the total event price;

    • 21 days or less before departure or event start: 100% of the total event price;

    If the reasons for your cancellation are covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges. It is your responsibility to satisfy yourself that you are covered. A cancellation invoice will be issued on request.

  • Mile building is open to anyone with some experience in sailing and who would put themselves as a competent crew or above. At LSS we believe the attitude to contribute and learn is the most important.
